“Can I take your pulse?”

David Lappin and Andy Hills are working through the early drafts of the script for their upcoming buddy cop feature. The two walk a rather slack rope which occasionally results in the kind of conflicts generated by sitting at the same poker table. Perhaps the most interesting one so far came about when Lappin raised under the gun and only Hills called in the big blind. A 6h 3c 5s flop came down and after being checked to, Lappin declined his option to continuation bet. The turn was the Qd, Hills led out 2.2k and Lappin called. The river was...

Double for Hanlon

Colm Hanlon opened to 1,400 (blinds 300/600) in early position and it folded round to big blind George Petten, who upped it to 4,000.  Back to Hanlon, who stayed still and quiet for a short time, before putting the rest of his stack over the line (it was 23,800 exactly).  Petten only had around 15,000 more than this, and took a while over his decision, which was, in the end, to call, while saying that it wasn’t a good idea.  Surely everyone who plays poker has seen that internal war going on, where the hand almost involuntarily throws chips in...

Evangelos Bech-Raking It In

Here are a few chip counts, incorporating all the biggest stack we can see, plus a few bonus players of note. Already massive chip leader at the dinner break, Evangelos Bechrakis has apparently been on a tear and is now up to a staggering 230,000. For reference, last night’s Day 1a chip leader Thomas Kolnes finished with 278k, while Seamus Cahill in second place bagged up 190k. Wide eyes emoji. Evangelos Bechrakis 230,000 Kristof Leenen 145,000 Benny Glaser 142,000 Max Silver 135,000 Gary McGinty 130,000 Christoph Cajochen 110,000 Amir Pirbazari 105,000 Marc Shepherd 90,000 David Lappin 90,000 Kyriakos Mitsopoulos 90,000 Steven...

Flopping Nuts and Taking Names: Max Silver

Fresh after his day off following his High Roller victory this week, Max Silver has returned to form in the Main Event.  On a 5s 2d 3s flop, Silver was facing Chris Dowling’s shove of around 24,000.  The fact that the cards weren’t already on their backs meant that a third player was making a decision, because he’d flopped the nuts with 4h 6h.  It was a quick call when action came to him. Dowling: Js 8s for the flush draw, which did not come in; Silver now has 135,000 chips, plenty with which to menace his table.

So nice you can play it twice

Daragh Davey rolled up (he really did, he took the local Luas like a boss) to Citywest Hotel, Hellmuthian late. His first bullet was dispensed with, as he described it, “in a series of cuts leading to a fatality.” Having been whittled down to 11k (from 30k starting) he squeezed ace jack for all the chips over an open and three calls. Unfortunately he ran into it — ace king being the “it” of that moment. The taciturn man, a fixture (think light fixture) of Irish poker, was utterly undeterred and fancying his chances at tournament poker (don’t we all...

No-Showdown All In

You know someone’s hand is in real trouble when they’ve bet all-in on the river and, when called, snap-muck, stand up and leave without a word. This is what just happened on Table 10, where the beneficiary of this no-showdown win was Philipp Zukernik who now has 62,000. The fact that neither one of the players had shown his cards at the end of the hand caused some mild consternation and the floor was requested. It was a bit too late to do anything about it as the dealer was already shuffling for the next hand, but collectively they decided...

Assorted Counts in the Main Event

So easy to typo that! Nevertheless, please enjoy this selection of chip counts acquired just now during a stroll around the tournament area. David Lappin 100,000 – in his own words, “This is among the greatest Day 1 performances in Irish Open history,” after cracking aces, hitting a six-outer, etc etc Max Silver 88,000 – still fully clothed despite threatening on Twitter to disrobe – sir, we have passed on your concerns about the temperature in here to the authorities, and something is being done about it right now! John Conroy 80,000 – just won a rather large pot with...
