Brigitte Metivier Wins Ladies’ Event and €4,610

The 70-runner €250 Ladies’ Event finished in the early morning as the live-streamed final table proved that the female players have the same late-nite tenacity as their male counterparts.  It was a near-miss for last year’s champion Rachel Heneghan who finished in third place, while start-of-final chip leader Chris Read was pipped to the trophy by Canadian Brigitte Metivier. Full results: # 1 Brigitte Metivier – €4,610 # 2 Christina Read – €3,070 # 3 Rachel Heneghan – €2,305 # 4 Kristina Litmola – €1,535 # 5 Vanessa Haney – €1,150 # 6 Monika Michno – €845 # 7 Kristine...

It’s Official – Biggest Field Ever

Oh wow, we’re not even at the first break and we have already beaten last year’s 1,340-strong field. Day 1a drew 249 entries, then the 453 from Day 1b made it a total of 702. With 661 entries for Day 1c so far, that means that we’re already at 1,363 entries for this year’s Irish Open Main Event. Registration/rebuys remain open right up until the start of Day 2 tomorrow, and there’s still the whole of the turbo Day 1d this evening to go. Very, very well done, poker players.

A touch of madness at table 58

All is well and amicably resolved at table 58, despite what might have been heard far and wide. Nick O’Hara, having done this a long time, has the handle of things. Though we must say, it took a bit of time on account of the consternation of certain players sat at the table. “It is your responsibility to count your chips!” we heard an animated Deborah Worley-Roberts shouting, at what we presume (and sincerely hope) was the top of her lungs. Variations of this point were made time and again while the able floor staff tried to cut through the...

O’Kane O’K

The structure of this event is such that early chunky showdowns are rare as sober shuffleboard players.  We did spot one hand going to the river, over on table 64: Pat Kiely raised to 400 preflop (blinds 75/150) and got four callers (three in position and the big blind). Flop: As 3d 4h.  Check to Kiely, who fired 1,200, called this time by Laurence O’Kane only. Turn: Ac.  Kiely led out quickly for 2,100, called just as quickly by O’Kane. River: 7d.  Another pair of quick decisions (this time, checks) and, showdown: Kiely had stopped betting with his Kd Kh...

Don’t Luke Now

We’re at over 600 entries now, and there have been four eliminations – two of which, incredibly, were Luke Jeffers. We’re not sure what happened to him, we guess it could have been aces and kings twice or something, but still, doing both your bullets in Level 1 is actually quite impressive. Er, well done? Also busted are Albert Sapiano (we think that’s his fourth or fifth shot at the Main, and we suspect he’ll be back), and Philipp Anger.

Guarantee = Smashed

We’ve already got over 550 players at the tables, and the numbers are rising rapidly. On top of this mammoth Day 1c, the turbo-format Day 1d is scheduled to begin at 9pm. Players are allowed a single rebuy in each “Day”, and should they do all four bullets today, they are permitted to buy straight in to Day 2 tomorrow as well. Oh, by the way, the €1 million guarantee was smashed before play had even started today. Prize pool currently €1.3 million and rising.

Irish Open Day 1c Gets Ready to Storm the Citywest

It’s time for the flight of flights in the 2019 Irish Poker Open Main Event!  There are already 485 players on the tournament board (and perpetually rising), but few at their tables. This may or may not be a result of the new mini putt set up in the lobby.Some folks are stumbling in having clearly had too much of a good time. It takes three to get cards in the air, though, so those lone wolves looking to card shark will have to have a touch of patience as their fellows reach for some hair of the dog that...
