Weijie Zheng Leads Main Event Final Table in Monster Style; Max Silver Trails in Second

You’ve sweated the €1,000,000 guarantee (no sweat, really; it was crushed early on).  You’ve seen 1,807 players enter the €1,150 Main Event (some of them multiple times).  You’ve watched the money bubble burst at 223, and cash handed out left and right over the last two days.  You might even have taken part in the epic beer pong tournament or the days and nights of partying if you’ve been at Citywest this week. Now we’re ready to crown the 2019 Irish Poker Open champion, with nine players returning tomorrow – well later today, strictly –  to fight for the trophy...

Sheer Absolute Unfettered Madness

There is no other description for what just happened. Thomas Gallagher, second in chips, opened the button to 250k, Weijie Zheng, chip leader, called in the big blind. The flop was 6h 6c 3d. The action went check, bet 300k, raise 800k, three-bet to 1.5M. Yes, you really did just read that. Strap in. Gallagher had 5M back. So what Zheng decided to do was move all in for 14 million chips. Gallagher thought about it. Why? Only the Oracle of Delphi could tell you. Because it turned out that Gallagher had As Qd. Finally the lunatics were subdued across...

Max Silver puts the screws to Sami Agel

It folded to Sami Agel in the cutoff just now and he raised to 250k at this nine-handed final. Max Silver was in the small blind and this would prove to be an enormous problem for Angel. There are some unsolved problems in the world. World peace, the three body problem, and the spot Max was about to put Sami in. First of all, Silver raised, to 750k. Angel called this three-bet with position. The flop came down 8d 8h 4s. The pot was 1.7M and the players had about twice this behind in their stacks. Cue the ICM carnage....

Weijie ‘Jarvey’ Zheng Leads Unofficial Final Table

The last 9/1,807 entrants in this year’s Irish Poker Open Main Event have made to the literal last table in use in the tournament, but for tomorrow’s Final Table to be officially set, we need to lose one of these plucky contenders: FINAL TABLE (unofficial) – seat order David Crilly – 5,000,000 Thomas Gallagher – 6,200,000 Weijie ‘Jarvey’ Zheng – 8,600,000 Sami Agel – 3,200,000 Raymond Wheatley – 4,200,000 Max Silver – 2,100,000 Steven Alper – 3,700,000 Seamus Cahill – 1,650,000 Dave Masters –  2,700,000 Zheng has refused to give up the lead he secured over three levels ago, and...

Alan Trueick eliminated in 10th (€17,500)

We were five handed on the outer table and it folded around to short stack Alan Trueick in the small blind. He had 1.83 million in front of him and we were up to 60k/120k/120k in terms of blinds and antes. Max Silver in the big blind was in the bottom three of the counts, but had Trueick covered, with something like 2.8 million. “All in” Trueick declared. “How much is that?” Silver asked the dealer in a whisper. 1.83 million was the count given. Silver checked the tournament information. He was not too happy about his spot, but seemed...

Luke Walsh Eliminated in 11th Place (€17,500)

Luke Walsh min-raised to 200k under the gun with Jc-Ts, and Raymond Wheatley tossed in the call from the big blind with 9h-Td to see a flop. And what a flop it was – 8h 9d 7h! Wheatley, with his top pair and up-and-down draw, checked it over. Walsh, already holding the nut straight, bet a cheeky 175k. Back to Wheatley, who made it 600k; then to Walsh, who pushed for 1.8 million – and then finally back to Wheatley, who called. Walsh was looking forward to his double up, but the gods had other ideas… Turn: 9s – that’s...

Andreas Wiborg Suddenly Busts via Back to Back Hands (12th for €17,500)

You concentrate for three days, you build a decent stack, you have the final table in your sights, and then suddenly you find yourself on the rail.  That’s if you’re Andreas Wiborg in this year’s Main Event, that is.  He lost two big hands in a row after playing for nearly 11 hours today to exit in 12th; as TD Nick said, “Poker can be a cruel game.” The first hand saw Thomas Gallagher open under the gun for 200k (blinds 100/200) and Dave Masters move all in over the top for 1,700,000.  It was small blind Andreas Wiborg, not...

Zheng Flops Quads, Doesn’t Get Paid

On the feature table, Jarvey Zheng opened to 230k with 8s-8s and received one call – Steven Alper in the small blind, holding 6s-6c. Flop: wait for it… … …Td 8c 8h! Which both players naturally checked. The turn brought the Kc, and Alper checked again, but this time Zheng pushed a modest 250k across the line. Alper wasn’t to know he’d been drawing dead since the flop, and made the call to see a 9d river and check once again. Zhang’s bet this time was a heftier 800k, prompting a long spell in the tank from Alper. Eventually he...

Silver chips up through Sami Agel

Action has slowed down here in level 30 of the main event. We are still holding at 12. But Max Silver has a bit more breathing room after defending his big blind versus Sami Agel’s button raise. It was 225k preflop that Agel raised and Silver called. The flop fell 6d 5s 4s. It was one we might expect to see a lead in ordinary circumstances. In any case, Agel recognized the dangers and checked back. Cue the turn, the 6c. Silver lead out at this card 250k and Agel called with a perfunctory air to him. The decision point...
