Weijie “Jervi” Zheng Wins the 2019 Irish Open Main Event (€300,000)

The atmosphere in the already craic-tastic tournament area has notched up a couple party levels! Chinese national and Galway resident Weijie “Jervi” Zheng has bested an immensely entertaining final table – and a record-breaking field of 1,807 players – to score €300,000 and, more importantly, the most coveted bit of hardware in Ireland: the 2019 Irish Open trophy.

Nine players returned today, with the stacks and seating like so:

Weijie Zheng Ireland 16,970,000
Max Silver United Kingdom 8,530,000
David Crilly Ireland 7,370,000
Thomas Gallagher Ireland 5,010,000
Raymond Wheatley Ireland 3,980,000
Steven Alper United Kingdom 3,835,000
Dave Masters Ireland 2,905,000
Sami Agel Luxembourg 2,775,000
Seamus Cahill Ireland 2,775,000

Weijie Zheng held a massive chip lead – on 16,970,000, he had double the stack of the next guy, Max Silver on 8,530,000. Zheng, who incidentally cashed 69th in the Main and won the High Roller Turbo last year, only increased his lead knocking out Steven Alper in 9th place (€21,000), leaving us with our “official” eight-handed final table.

Despite an early double up through Zheng,  Seamus Cahill succumbed next in 8th (€27,500), his short stack disappearing into the rapidly increasing one of Dave Masters. Zheng also claimed the scalp of Max Silver in 7th place (€37,500) – the luckless Silver just couldn’t get a break today, first doubling up Dave Masters in a nasty outdraw and then smacking into an A-T v T-T cooler against Zheng. We say luckless, but Silver’s had an extraordinarily good run at this Irish Open, taking down the €2k High Roller for €45,130 as well.

Thomas Gallagher knocked out the man from Luxembourg, Sami Agel, in 5th place (€63,520), making it an all-Irish affair four-handed. Gallagher dispatched Raymond Wheatley in 4th place (€85,000) as well – before trying it on with Zheng in an outrageous bluff that cost him his tournament life, finishing in 3rd place for €125,000.

Heads up: and then it was over. Dave Masters, who’d been playing with outrageous and hilarious aggression throughout, immediately moved in with pocket sixes, and Zheng snap-called with K-J. A jack on the flop was all it took to end probably the most entertaining and good-natured Main Event final table these bloggers have ever seen.

The 2019 Irish Open took place April 15-22 at CityWest hotel in Dublin, and besides the €1,000,000 Guaranteed Main Event (which, incidentally, smashed its guarantee with a total €1,805,870 prizepool), comprised another 27 events on top, all of which exceeded their commensurate fields last year.

It was inevitable that much of the record-breaking field would hang around for a few more tries at trophy-hunting.  From the previously mentioned High Roller to the final Turbo (still ongoing at time of writing), fields were large and competition fierce.  There was something for everyone: a €350 Heads Up, the third incarnation of The Hendon Mob Championship, a 70-runner Ladies’ Event, PLO 6-Max, the €250 Mini Irish Open, 8-Max Championship, and extra turbos for those who just couldn’t get enough tournament poker.  For full results from all side events, head to the Live Updates Tab (the one you hovered over to get here) and go to the “Chip Counts and Redraws” part.

Away from the tables, the shenanigans continued – always a party, this year the atmosphere throughout the festival broke all records in terms of craic. Organised events included mini-golf in the bar, player karaoke and the ever-popular Beer Pong Championship (known to some as the Real Main Event), and plenty more entertainment occurred that hadn’t been officially scheduled. We’d love to elaborate further, but what happens at the Irish Open, stays at the Irish Open.

While the cash games (and some side events) continue into the night, a party is being thrown at 10pm in honour of our new champion (he told Andrew Hedley on the live stream that he was going to play PLO cash, but we suspect he was bluffing), and we feel that for the sake of journalistic integrity, we ought to attend. Our livers have been in training for it all week. All that remains is to say a massive thank you to all the dealers, floor staff, hotel staff, organisers, the live stream team (with special shout out to Andrew Hedley and Fintan Gavin for outstanding commentary), and, most importantly, the players who make this event the best poker festival in the world. We have been your blog team – Dana Immanuel, Jen Mason and Gareth Chantler. Irish Open, the craic has been mighty. Until next year – if you want us, we’ll be in the bar.
